RWES 2015 Special Awards

Kristina West, a PhD candidate at the University of Reading, UK, is the recipient of the Graduate Student Paper Award for her paper “#Emerson in 140 characters or less” which was part of a roundtable on Digital Emerson studies. Kristina is working on a dissertation about Emerson’s constructions of childhood.

Nicholas Guardiano, who completed his PhD in 2014 with his dissertation “Transcendentalist Aesthetics in Emerson, Peirce, and 19th Century American Landscape Painting,” received the Research Award to support archival research on the transcendentalist roots of Charles Peirce’s philosophy.

Tyson Forbes and his theater company TigerLion Arts, received the Community Project award to support his theater production of Nature, based on the writings of Emerson and his contemporaries. Jean Mudge, an independent scholar, received the Subvention Award to assist with publication costs of her book Mr. Emerson’s Revolution (forthcoming Open Book Publishers).

Gillian Osborne, a PhD candidate at University of California, Berkeley, received this year’s Packer Fellowship Award to conduct archival research at the American Antiquarian Society on Thoreau and antebellum botany. RWES established this fellowship with the AAS in memory of noted Emerson scholar and professor Barbara Packer.
