These bibliographies are based upon the lists published annually in Emerson Society Papers, supplemented by additional information. They begin with the year’s publications for 1991, picking up after the period covered by Robert E. Burkholder and Joel Myerson in Emerson: An Annotated Secondary Bibliography (Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 1985) and Ralph Waldo Emerson: An Annotated Bibliography of Criticism, 1980-1991 (Westport, Conn.: Greenwood Press, 1994). The lists in Emerson Society Papers were prepared by David M. Robinson (1992-present), and served as the basis for Robinson’s chapters on “Emerson, Thoreau, Fuller, and Transcendentalism” in American Literary Scholarship: An Annual (Durham: Duke University Press, 1965- ). Because of space limitations, both of these bibliographies were necessarily selective, and additional information has been added here, marked with an astrerisk (*) in the annotation to assist those who have already used the ESP or ALS bibliographies to easily identify material not in the other sources.
